Sunrise Promise

I love waking up before the sun has risen. It may seem silly and unimportant, but for me I always feel a burst of hope and excitement. What will today bring to me? What will I do with it? What can I create to help improve my understanding of people and the world around me? What can I do to bring meaning and joy to as many people as possible, especially my family?

There is always a way and always hope in the next sunrise, and in the next second, and in the next minute. – Ziggy Marley

For me, I think the sun rising is symbolic of going from the darkness where it’s sometimes hard to see the details clearly, to the light that starts out warm and encouraging and peaceful and slowly brings things into focus. Gently nudging me to greet the day with hope and optimism. It’s a transition from the much needed silence of the night for rest and repair, to rising into the sky with power and energy and purpose to be brilliant and vibrant. It’s letting go of any fails I may have had yesterday and makes me say to myself, “I want to be as brilliant and vibrant as I can be today.”

It encourages me to rise from my rest to make the most of another day of life gifted to me. It taunts me to not squander opportunities to set goals that support my growth in mind, body and spirit. And every day, I reply with, “I will do the best I’m capable of today” and leave it at that. I’m learning to abandon unreasonable expectations that are unfair and to be honest, they’re mean. I don’t expect giant leaps of progress. I don’t expect to have a perfect home life, elbowing June Cleaver out of the way, making room for the new standard of motherly perfection. Really? Ah, no thanks! I’m not buying into ridiculous benchmarks of happiness or success as a mom or businesswoman.

The transition from dark to light is one of positive assessment. I make promises to myself to make adjustments that help improve my actions from yesterday. Can I adapt in a way that brings more success professionally and personally? Be more patient, more understanding, practice more self-control? I’m learning not to demand too much from today only hoping to make some little improvement. Every step I make, even a tiny one, brings me closer to goals I’ve set to help me be more loving, more balanced, healthier and more productive.  I’ll be honest. Eliminating the pressure that bullies me with cruel judgment allows room for a more peaceful and satisfying day.

Oprah Winfrey has said this about a sunrise, “What I know for sure is that every sunrise is like a new page, a chance to right ourselves and receive each day in all its glory. Each day is a wonder.” If we don’t wake with hope of doing better today than we did yesterday, where is the adventure? Where is the achievement? Where is the reason to do anything?

You don’t have to do something extraordinary, you just need to try to improve on one little thing you did yesterday. Do better. Be better. Feel better. Live better! What if everyone woke with this attitude? What kind of world would it be? I’m not trying to be better than anyone. I’m just trying to be a better version of me each day and the sunrise beckons me to do this.

Keep it Simple,
Just Teri
