Life is a tapestry threaded by many diverse events and emotions. I want to say something about the dark times. There are many kinds of “dark times”. Health issues. Relationship issues. Business or work issues. It happens when you’re thrust into an unexpected change of life. It happens with expected life changes too. Dark times can leave us full of sadness and confusion, paralyzed by fear, choking on insecurity or envy or guilt. Yes, dark times feel like a truly cruddy part of life!
What I want to share here is what helps me dissolve or minimize emotional overload, and evade a threatening meltdown or potential explosion. In the middle of the muck that’s causing distress or dis-ease, I’ve learned to latch onto a positive thought that helps pull me out of any negative quicksand or downward spiral.
Here it is…
The sun is always shining. To be in the light simply depends on where we’re standing.
I remember that no matter where anyone is on this great, big, beautiful planet, the sun is always shining on it. If we can’t see the sun, it doesn’t mean the sun, a life-sustaining force and symbol of illumination and optimism and hope, isn’t still there. It’s simply a matter of where we’re currently at in our life. In that moment, we may be in pitch black. Not a sliver of light, at all, on the horizon. And, no indication of oncoming light. Zilch! If we had never seen the sun shine after the darkest hours, you could never convince us we were going to see the light again. Because we hadn’t yet experienced it.
This is life. There are dark hours that can be horrific, unfair, exhausting and seem hopeless. You may have gone through this before. You may be going through it now. What we need to remember is that the dark hours exist to provide balance.
The earth couldn’t exist with total sunshine. It would burn out. This is how nature balances life. It requires a diverse system of growth, challenge, rest and death. It’s a cycle that works for the beneficial existence of every living thing. Humans, are not exempt and taking time to observe nature let’s us connect with life’s natural rhythm.
The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.

So, at times when life seems like it’s dark and feels like there isn’t a bright side coming, have faith. Don’t sit idle. Do your part to get through it. Do what you can, whatever that is. Take small, sure steps in the direction that feels right. We can never get to where we want to be by standing where we are now.
Life is not easy, and it wasn’t meant to be, either. This isn’t a mistake. Challenge is part of growth and it will include dark times. We have to have the faith and believe we’ll make it through. And, we can. ❤
